This
footage was taken at a meeting of the Central Coast Human Resources
Managers Association in Monterey, California, while Paul was giving a
talk to the association's members. The Channel 46 news team decided
stress was a very important, timely topic, and video-taped part of his
seminar, then interviewed Paul about his area of expertise: Stress
management.
Paul has learned from his own stress-filled experiences. His dad died of
a stress heart attack at the age of 57, and as Paul follows that same
path, he practices what he preaches in order to not end up like his
father.
In this day and age we are constantly fighting to keep on top of
everything, having to do this and do that. We are in a constant struggle
to keep financially fit, and when we are constantly struggling, frenzy
and chaos easily take over our lives. |
Paul talks about new coping mechanisms that we all can use to help us
stay healthy. He integrates down-to-earth realistic ways of dealing with
stress. From foods that relax, to how interaction with friends and
family can give us a sense of belonging, thus feeling more relaxed.
Paul Haider talks about how we hold our breath when we get stressed and
how shallow breathing has been associated with Agoraphobia, Panic
attacks, Muscle Tension, Fatigue, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, and
more. Babies breathe with their abdomens moving in and out, allowing the
diaphragm to push up and down on the lungs. They don't breathe like
Marines, as some of us do, trying to hold in our stomachs and breathe at
the same time. Get rid of the constrictive clothing, let that stomach
out, breath deep, and live longer.
He says "Our mind is like a computer and we need to shut it down on
a regular basis. Sometimes we get overwhelmed and the only thing that
will help is sitting in silence for 20 to 30 minutes and
breathing."
Our immune system is very vulnerable to stress and Paul talks about how
we can change this to have a healthy immune system and ward off disease.
In this interview people are asked if they are stressed, and almost
everyone is stressed to some degree or another. In fact, in a leading
poll, 80-90% of the public said they were feeling overwhelmed with
stress. No wonder people on this tape agreed that stress is a major
problem. Paul says "This topic is about living life, not about
doing. We have to remember we are human beings, not human doings."
The attendees rated his seminar very highly. Here are a few of the
comments from the crowd "Such wonderful tools to use at home or at
work," "Wonderful and relaxing," "Enjoyed both the
topic and the speaker,"and "The speaker was excellent."
