“Jicama is a Great Weight Loss Food and Contains Inulin for Probiotics”
Jicama is a great tasting root veggie that’s sweet and crisp.
Names – Jicama is pronounced “Hee Kah Mah” and it’s also called by other names such as mexican turnip, mexican water chestnut, sengkwang, singkamas, liáng shǔ, plus in China it’s called dòushǔ… and jicama is related to lima beans and some call it yam bean.
Where Jicama Grows – Jicama is a root veggie that grows in Central and South America and in the Caribbean… and it can also be found all over Asia and China.
Taste – Jicama tastes like a cross between apple and potato — crisp, clean, refreshing, and sweet, even kids like jicama – Wonderful!
This is one of my favorite veggies – I love Jicama.
Growing – Jicama can be grown from the tuber or from seed, but it needs a long growing season of 150 days in order to produce great tasting jicama roots. Jicama loves full sun or light shade, and grows with a beautiful climbing vine… the vine is also very ornamental and works well in containers.
Inulin and Probiotics – Jicama is full of the probiotic agent inulin, which is important growing good bacteria in the colon… jicama is a great source of inulin.
Weight Loss – Jicama only contains about 17.5 calories per 50 grams of jicama, thus making it a great diet food for weight loss.
Fat Free – Jicama is fat and cholesterol free.
Great Fiber – Jicama is full of fiber thus helping to protect the colon from disease such as cancer.
Juicing – Jicama makes a wonderful sweet tasting juice that’s full of nutrients that are great for the body… and jicama juice has also been used to lower cholesterol.
Fights Infection – Studies in Japan show that jicama boosts the immune system to fight infections… and you can buy jicama in capsules in Asia called Kwao Krua to fight infection.
Antioxidants – Jicama contains lots of powerful antioxidants such as Vitamin C and A which prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes, and cancer. Plus they also help to prevent colds, flues, and repair DNA damage from free radicals.
Alkalizing – Jicama is very alkalizing thus making it great for alkalizing the body to prevent disease… plus it also helps to neutralize stomach acid, a glass of jicama juice will do your stomach good.
Anti-inflammatory – Jicama contains anti-inflammatory agents that help with swelling, redness, and pain… and it also helps with asthma.
Phytoestrogens – Jicama contains plant based estrogens that balance hormones.
Low Glycemic Index – Jicama has a very low glycemic index – 1 oz of jicama has a glycemic index of “0”… making it great for diabetics.
Great Skin – Jicama is great for acne and for creating younger looking skin as a topical agent… plus jicama is used commercially in lotions and scrubs.
Contains – Jicama contains Vitamin E for sexual health, Vitamin K for clotting, and jicama is a wonderful source of B vitamins for energy and vitality… plus it also contains a small amount of beta-carotene for boosting the immune system.
Minerals – Jicama contains iron and copper for anemia, calcium for strong bones, potassium for cardiovascular health and water regulation, a little bit of zinc for immune support, manganese for enzyme production… and magnesium for healthy muscles and nerves.
Uses – Jicama is wonderful in salads, used raw dipped in hummus, and many people combine it with fruits. Some people cook jicama in soups, stews, mash them like potatoes, cook them with meats, seafood, and chicken… and even stir fry jicama.
In Asia they combine jicama with pineapple, mango, sweet potato, apples and other fruits for a sweet treat.

Natural Pesticide – The leaves and stems of the plant contain rotenone which is a natural pesticide. It can be sprayed to kill roaches, ants (Fire Ants), and other pests and it’s environmentally safe. Also in the Amazon the natives use rotenone to kill fish. (always used all pesticide safely) The root which we eat does not contain any pesticide… it’s a very nutritious and safe veggie.
Storage – Store your jicama just like potatoes in a cool dry place.
Finding – Lots of supermarkets in the states sell jicama and you can find jicama at Asian and Latin markets.
