Chicory – Chicory Root has been around for centuries and has many health benefits… and it has been used as a coffee substitute for a long time. Roasted chicory has a very rich dark color, and bright full flavor that smells and tastes similar to coffee. Plus it has many great benefits that are not found in coffee.
Chicory has a sister plant that’s very well know – endive a common green, but it’s not the same as chicory.
Chicory grows in the US, Europe, Africa, Asia, and in many other areas of the world… and it’s very common in the south to add chicory to coffee. Chicory goes all the way back to medieval times when people in France and Holland would add chicory to their coffee for great flavor.
Chicory contains a large amount of inulin a fiber that does not break down in the GI tract and thus creates a perfect environment for growing probiotic bacteria.

Inulin boosts growth of probiotic bacteria… thus it also boosts immunity thus preventing disease.
Green Bananas – Short chain fatty acids (Resistant Starch) important for colon health and helps in the treatment of colitis, IBS, and other colon diseases. In fact there’s a protocol called “Green Banana Therapy” that’s all about eating a cooked green banana 30 minutes before eating any other food to prevent colon problems. In fact eating cooked green bananas is a simple quick way of taking care of your colon disease.
Also cooked green bananas slow down your digestive tract, add fiber to your diet, and contain fiber that’s beneficial to the probiotic bacteria in your colon. In fact according to the National Institute of Health short chain fatty acids are well known for preventing colon cancer.
And cooked green bananas also contain large amounts of pectin which is important for gut motility and for ending constipation. And green bananas contain inulin which is needed for probiotic bacteria growth.
Burdock Root – Fresh Burdock Root contain polyacetylenes, which kills some types of bacteria and fungi and can also be used to treat ringworm, urinary tract infections, and acne and promote wound healing and treat ulcers. It is a good diuretic and flushes toxins from the body and is also a good liver cleansing herb. Burdock Root can also be use in ointments for acne, eczema, and psoriasis and as an oil for dandruff.
And the Burdock plant contains dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, amino acids, and a lot of trace minerals and is also very low in calories.

Dandelion Root – Dandelion Root is a great blood detoxing agent and also helps to cleans the liver toxins. At the same time dandelion root is full of inulin and inulin provides a fiber like sugar that promotes the growth of probiotic bacteria. We should have at least 4 lbs of good bacteria in our gut and most of us only have about 1/5 of that amount.
So it’s important to use dandelion root and foods to promote the growth of good bacteria and thus boost our immune system and stay health.
Artichokes – Artichoke hearts (you can find marinated artichoke hearts in the stores) and artichokes in general are great because they are in the same family as Milk Thistle… wonderful for cleansing the liver and lowering cholesterol.
And they also contain a good about of inulin that helps to boost your immune system by create an environment full of fiber like sugars that promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut.
Jerusalem Artichokes – Jerusalem Artichokes are especially high in inulin… a soluble non-starch polysaccharide that promotes the growth of good bacteria in your gut.
These little tubers are great raw in salads, can be made into flour for pasta, and they can be cooked and added to stews, casseroles, and many other dishes. They have a nice potato and nutty flavor that’s wonderful. And when eat raw they have a crispness that’s unusual and tantalizing at the same time.
Jerusalem Artichokes have a beautiful sunflower like flower and are easy to grow. Just plant a few tubers and they will take off, the problem is not allowing them to take over your whole yard. But the good thing is you will have a wonderful source of inulin all year round.
And there are other sources of inulin like some grains, green onions, asparagus, jicama, legumes, leeks, garlic, red beets, yacon, salsify, and a few more.
