“You Can Have Great Vision All Your Life”
Here are my top herbs, supplements, and foods that help with Glaucoma and intra-ocular pressure and other eye-related diseases. First of all, if you have eye problems in your family it’s very important to eat according to my diet… see my diet link at the bottom of this article… and thus prevent eye problems from taking place in the first place.
Vinpocetine Herb or Periwinkle Flowers – Glaucoma – Studies show that Vinpocetine may also have some ability to lower eye pressure associated with glaucoma.
Vinpocentine Herb – Macular Degeneration – Studies also show that Vinpocetine may also help to prevent macular degeneration and prevent age-related blindness.
Vinpocentine Herb – Night Vision – Night vision is enhanced with Vinpocetine making it easier to see and drive at night.
Dose for Vinpocentine – Most people take from 10 to 40 mg daily and it does not have any side-effects other than GI distress if you take too much.
CoQ10 Supplement – CoQ10 is another powerful antioxidant that can help to prevent retinal damage… and get rid of free radicals and prevent and heal DNA damage. I recommend taking at least 300 mg daily.
Codonopsis Herb – Codonopsis can also help with kidney disease, pancreatitis, glaucoma, fibroids, and prostate disease. Codonopsis also relaxes arteries and increase circulation throughout the body. Codonopsis protects the heart and the circulatory system from the ravages of free radicals, as a powerful anti-oxidant.
Dose for Condonopsis – 200 to 700 mg daily for 7 to 10 days and then take a week off and repeat if needed. It can thin the blood and help prevent clotting so be aware of that.
Bilberry Herb – Bilberry contains antioxidants that help with eye function. And prevent retinal damage… I recommend taking at least 300 mg daily.
Bitter Kola – Bitter Kola is a nut from African that’s very important for great health. Bitter Kola is a powerful vasodilator and antioxidant… and Bitter Kola used as eye drops can lower intra-ocular eye pressure thus helping with glaucoma. Take from 20 to 100 mg daily for 7 to 10 days and then take 10 days off and repeat if needed.
Forskohlii Root – Forskohlii Root is an herb that grows in Northern India and also in Thailand. Forskohlii Root has many health benefits. Forskohlii Root is great for those suffering from glaucoma because it lowers intraocular pressure. Dose – 2 to 10 mg daily for 7 to 10 days… then take a week off and then repeat if needed.
Astaxanthin Supplement – This is a powerful antioxidant like Vitamin A and can help prevent damage to the retina. I recommend taking at least 2 mg daily.
Yuca – Yucca or Yuca can also be used for glaucoma and Yucca is full of Vitamin C and lots of great minerals… plus it also contains protein, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and it’s anti-inflammatory…. which are all important for eye health. Yuca can be found in capsules and also as the edible root in Latin Stores. But yuca has to to be cooked, and the roots taste great… this is also called tapioca root in the US. This root is food so there is really no formal dose.
Ashwagandha Herb – Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the causes of poor eye health and this powerful adaptogen can help prevent this from taking place as we get older. Take from 100 mg up to 1600 mg daily for 7 to 10 days and then take a week off and repeat.
Zeaxanthin and Lutein – Zeazanthin is in the same family as Lutein and is of great benefit for the eyes. Zeaxanthin is a great anti-oxidant and a bioflavonoid pigment found in lots of healthy foods and it’s also a good anti-inflammatory agent.
Zeaxanthin can with many conditions including diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, or glaucoma, and it also protects the eye against ultraviolet damage. And Zeaxanthin is also good for prevention of cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and stroke. Zeaxanthin can be found in multiple vitamins… especially vitamin formulas for the eyes. Dose for both is from 20 mg to 400 mg daily.
Dan Shen Root or Red Sage Root – Those who suffer from diabetic retinopathy can benefit from Dan Shen because it can stop the progression of leaky blood vessels in the eye… and it may also help with glaucoma.
Dose for Dan Shen Root – You can make the tea by taking a teaspoon of the herb and steeping it in a cup of hot water for 15 minutes… and drinking the tea 3 times a day. The tinctures can be taken at the rate of 30 to 60 drops in juice 3 times a day. The extract should be taken at the rate of 15 to 30 drops 3 times a day. As a powder up to 270 mg 3 times a day.
Side Effects of Dan Shen Root – Dan Shen has been used safely for thousands of years but those who are pregnant, nursing, or young children should not use Dan Shen. Also, those who are using Dan Shen for cardiovascular challenges should seek the guidance of a good herbalist. And Dan Shen should not be used in combination with anticoagulants or aspirin. It can prolong bleeding times when used with these drugs or some anti-inflammatories drugs.
Foods and Diet – Diet is the key to preventing glaucoma in the first place and especially eating lots of raw fruits and veggies… so I recommend going on my Whole-Foods Plant-Based Diet and Lifestyle and becoming extremely healthy like me. And foods that contain lots of antioxidants as in my diet are super important. See link to diet – https://paulhaider.wordpress.com/2013/09/17/the-whole-foods-plant-based-diet-and-life-style/
