Culantro is a distant cousin of cilantro and also of coriander and has similar qualities.
Found All Over – Culantro is wonderful when used in all kinds of dishes and is well known in the Caribbean including Puerto Rico, Asia, Latin America, the West Indies, and is becoming very popular in England, Canada, and the US.
And Culantro is becoming a hit all over the world with cultivation being expanded to just about everywhere. It’s also found in Hawaii, Mexico, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma and many other areas… you might want to try it.
Medicinal Uses – Culantro makes a wonderful tea for colds, flues, and for settling down your upset stomach. Also it works well for relieving stomach aches and vomiting… and helps to calm the mind/body.
Lowers Glucose – Culantro lowers blood sugar levels, probably because of the powerful anti-inflammatory abilities.
Lowers Blood Pressure – Culantro can also help with high blood pressure.
Asthma – And because Culantro is highly anti-inflammatory it can also help with asthma.
Anti-inflammatory – Culantro is great for getting rid of pain, swelling, and inflammation, and works well for arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It contains large amounts of the plant sterol – “stigma sterol” that works well for inflammation.
Pain Relief – Culantro also contains trimethylbenzaldehydes which is a powerful pain reliever. Culantro tea can be used to sooth away earaches, stomachaches, and headaches.
Epilepsy – Culantro has a very calming effect and works wonders for preventing and sooth away epileptic fits. Culantro has been used for years for this purpose, and science is doing studies to see how Culantro can be used for treating epileptic fits. In some places in the world they call culantro “Fitweed” hence it’s ability to help with epileptic fits.
Growing – Culantro grows like a weed and also grows well in pots on your patio. Just snip off the older leaves for use… and allow it to keep growing, works great in a window gardens too. It likes water but does not like being totally soaked. If grown in direct sun Culantro flowers early and seeds down again… and the plant dies, but if you keep the plants in light shade they grow for long periods of time.
Culantro likes tropical and subtropical regions but does well in a green house or in a window or patio areas where it’s slightly warmer. And the whole plant can be cut and dried for later use.
Contains – Culantro or Racao has broad leaves with a taste that is very similar to cilantro. And it’s high in A, B, and C vitamins all of which are powerful antioxidants and help to boost vitality and immunity. Also contains some iron for anemia and phosphorus for strong bones and other minerals.
Cooking – Culantro is used for cooking meats, in soups, stews, chutneys, snacks, sauces, and in just about anything you cook, and it can also be used raw in salads. Plus it’s used in sushi and other Asian dishes… and in Indian cooking. And Culantro freezes well and can be pulled out when needed and added to soups and stews.
Attracts Beneficial Insects – Plant Culantro in your garden because it attracts lady bugs, lacewings, and other beneficial insects, and keeps away aphids too.
