Names – This fruit which is also called kiwano or Cucumis metuliferus (Called Kiwano because it looks similar to a Kiwi Fruit inside) originally came from Southern Africa and was imported to Australia and New Zealand where it was developed into the well known exported fruit we know today. Horned melon also belongs to the cucumber family.
Where it Grows – Horned melon grows in the US, California, New Zealand, Chile, South America, Africa, Australia, and some parts of Europe.
Antioxidants – Horned melon contains lots of great antioxidants that stave off cardiovascular disease, strokes, and cancer.
Vitamin A – Horned melon contains a good amount Vitamin A or Betacarotene which is important for healthy mucus membranes, eye health, and prevents DNA damage.
Vitamin C – Horned melon contains jelly in it just like tomatoes, and that jelly contains Vitamin C which is important for preventing colds, flues, and other infections. Plus it also helps to prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes, cancer, and it also slows the aging process.
Vitamin E – Horned melon also contains vitamin E for sexual health, great looking skin, and cardiovascular health.
Zinc – Horned melon contains zinc for boosting up your immune system and it also boosts up your metabolism. And at the same time zinc helps with red blood cell production and wound healing.
Omega Fatty Acids – Horned Melon seeds contain a good amount of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for cardiovascular health and healthy tissues.
Contains – Horned melon also contains iron for anemia, calcium and phosphorus for strong bones, B Vitamins for vitality and good mood, potassium for water regulation and cardiovascular health, magnesium for vessel heath and relaxation, and manganese for enzyme production.
Taste – Horned melon tastes a little bit like a mixture of sweet banana, mango, watermelon, cucumber, and lime… and has the consistency of passion fruit inside. It’s hard to describe the taste, you’ll just have to taste it for yourself.
Fat Free – Horned melon is a good weight loss food because it’s fat free and low in calories.
Inside – Horned melon has a lot of edible seeds like cucumbers and also a lot of gelatin like substance like that found in tomatoes but it’s green and sweet.
Eating – You can cut a horned melon in half and suck out the jelly for a sweet treat, and the seeds are edible like cucumbers.
Leaves – In Africa the leaves are boiled and also consumed as a veggie… so horned melons could be a multipurpose fruit and veggie.
Using – Lots of people use horned melons for decoration, also the jelly is served over ice cream, it can be made into refreshing juice, used in salads, and if you add vinegar to the jelly and blend it… it works great as a salad dressing, and it also works well over meats when cooking.
And if you google “Recipes for Horned Melon” lots of great recipes will come up – even horned melon martinis. You can add a little bit of sweetener of your choice to make the jelly even sweeter. And horned melon jelly can be used for cooking.
Growing – Horned melons like cool temperatures around 60 degrees and will thrive and spread at the temperature… so plant horned melons in the winter. Plus horned melons like full sun, but other than that, they are not very particular, they will grow anywhere.
Finding – You can find horned melons in just about any supermarket, in Asian Markets, and you can order seeds on-line, even Amazon has them.
