“Can We Consume Enough Protein on a Whole Foods Plant Based Diet?”
The Answer is a Resounding — “YES”
Here I am at 63 years young, and I’ve been on a Whole Foods Plant Based Diet for Years. I walk 5 to 7 miles a day, do 64 pull-ups, 64 pushups, and 100 crunches and I feel great– No aches, no pains, and my blood work is super.
Many people wonder how they can get enough protein while being on a Whole Foods Plant Based Diet? But the answer is easy, and I’m living proof that anyone can get enough protein while on this wonderful diet and be extremely health too.
Right now we have so many people eating large amounts of animal protein and we have a huge epidemic of kidney disease, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes. All plant based sources of food such as fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, and other sources contain up to 50% protein. But our body only needs about 5 or 6% protein that’s exactly the amount of protein that our body needs to thrive.
Legumes – Beans are the one thing that holds all of the centurion groups of people on earth together. Legumes are central to life, they create lots of protein, cleans the body, cleans the colon, and give life to probiotic bacteria in our gut. And it’s been shown that the more fiber we eat the more good bacteria we have in our gut thus we are healthier because probiotic bacteria improve our immune system and also prevents depression. None of the centurion culture around the world eat the same types of beans, some loved garbanzo beans, others lentils, some soybeans, and others pink beans and more. But in general it really didn’t matter what beans or legumes they were eating, it’s just the fact that they did consume lots of beans. Studies show that people who eat as little as a 1/2 cup of beans daily reduce their mortality rate by up to 34% which is pretty amazing. And beans help to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes— The big three diseases that are hitting the world hard. And beans contain lots of protein, for every 100 grams of beans consumed the body receives 21 grams of protein—Amazing! And that’s bioavailable protein that will do the body good.
Nuts – Nuts are also another source of great protein for the body. And again for every 100 grams of nuts the body receives 20 grams of protein… and again good bioavailable protein that the body can use to heal and build muscle. And one study showed that eating nuts even lowers cholesterol and thus helps to prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes, and even cancer. Wether it be walnuts, almonds, pistachios, peanuts, pine nuts, pecans, coconut, cashews or some other nut they all contain lots of trace minerals which are important for enzyme production and for good mood. But nuts do contain lots of fat so it’s important to eat nuts in moderation, eating 10 or 12 nuts daily.
Grains and Seeds – There are also many grains and seeds which are high in protein which are wonderful for a whole foods plant based diet. Grains and seeds such as quinoa, chia, sorghum, brown rice, millet, teff, corn, amaranth, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, and other grains and seeds which contain lots of high quality protein. In fact one cup of quinoa contains 8 grams of great protein. And quinoa contains all the essential amino acids making quinoa a complete protein. And these high quality sources of protein especially the organic ones are for the most part free of pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides and other chemicals that are found inmost types of animal protein.
Veggies – Veggies also contain lots of good proteins which are bioavailable and help to create strong muscles and promote great health. Veggies such as broccoli, kale, peas, artichokes, spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens, sprouts of all kinds, winter squash, summer squash, cabbage, asparagus, and cauliflower… and many more all contain lots of great protein. Take for instance sprouts of different kinds can contain up to 13 grams of great protein per 100 grams of sprouts. And all of that protein is bioavailable and thus does the body good.
Fruits – Also fruits contain lots of wonderful protein which helps create great health. Fruits like guavas, cherries, cranberries, apricots, mulberries, starfruit, passion fruit, oranges, apples, melons, avocados, and more fruits all have lots of great protein. In fact 100 grams of guava contains 2.6 grams of wonderful protein, And an avocado contains 2 grams of protein. So we have a large source of protein that works create a powerful healthy body without all the health challenges associated with eating animal protein.
Other Protein Sources – Foods like chlorella which is an algae contains up to 50 percent protein – Wow! That’s more than just about any other source of protein in general. And chlorella contains all the essential and none essential proteins too— all the proteins the body would every need, plus all the vitamins and minerals we need. And just in case take a B-Complex to be sure you get all your vitamins… and a person will be extremely healthy just like me.
So there you have it—YES— A Whole Foods Plant Based Diet does contain lots of great bioavailable protein which does the body good!
