“Also Known as Cang Er Zi in Chinese Medicine”
Most everyone sooner or later runs into cockleburs having them caught in their clothing. But most people don’t know Cockleburs have medicinal value for getting rid of phlegm, cold, dampness, arthritis, fevers, eczema, rashes, and much more.
Other Names – In Traditional Chinese Medicine cocklebur is called Cang Er Zi, and Xanthium orientale and there are many species of this common weed and herb.
Where they Grow – Cocklebur grows all over the world from the US and Canada, Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. They grow wild in open areas and around lakes and rivers. And they are toxic to grazing animals.
Spines Removed – When used as a herbal product the spines of the fruit are removed because the spines contain a very toxic chemical.
Contains – Modern science has found that the fruits contain resin, xanthostrumarin, fatty acids, Vitamin C, alkaloids, and more. And leaves contain xanthanol and xanthumin. Also contains plytosterols and glycosides.
Lowers Blood Sugar – Cocklebur can lower blood sugar making it good for those with diabetes.
Lowers Blood Pressure – Cocklebur can lower blood pressure and the leading cause of kidney disease is high blood pressure.
Stops a Nagging Cough – Cocklebur fruit can also help with nagging dry coughs.
For Thick Mucous – Cocklebur in addition to Magnolia Flower, Angelica, and Field Mint works great for healing thick mucous accumulation.
Anti-Fungal – Cocklebur is also a good anti-fungal compound.
Helps with Arthritis – The fruit of the plant also works well for chronic arthritis and lumbago.
Chronic Bronchitis – The fruit also helps with chronic bronchitis and non-productive coughs.
Relieves Constipation – The fruit also helps end constipation.
Kills Bacteria – There is some indication in laboratory studies that Cocklebur can kill many different kinds of bacteria.
Leaves and Roots – The leaves and roots have many powerful abilities including being a laxative, a powerful sedative, diuretic, and helps with inflammation.
Powerful Anti-inflammatory Agent – Cocklebur also contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents that help with redness, pain, swell, and works great for arthritis and joint pain.
Fevers – The root has been used for hundreds of years for lowering fevers.
Yellow Dye – The leaves of the plant also makes a wonderful yellow dye for cloth.
Dose – Most people recommend 3 to 10 grams daily… but use the least amount needed.
Forms – Cocklebur fruit can be found as powders, tea pills, and in teas.

*Side Effects – Cocklebur fruit and plants are very toxic and should “only” be used under the direct supervision of a TCM practitioner or Master Herbalist. And anyone who is pregnant, nursing, or small children should not use cocklebur.
